PRODUCT KNOWLEDGE - "Do you want to buy half a printer"
We where asked to quote for a new photocopier / printer, the clients requirements where that they needed to produce 200 x 10 page booklets overnight.
We produced our quote which we felt was very reasonable only to be told that we where £800 pounds more expensive than Canon.
Fortunately we knew the customer and they trusted us enough to show us the Canon quote. It immediately became apparent that the Canon salesman had not listened to the clients request. He had quoted for a machine which had a 2,500 sheet paper supply but he had not thought about the finished product. His machine had only got the standard 500 sheet catch tray, which would have required the client to be present to remove the finished booklets or the printer would have stopped every 50 sets.
We had quoted for a machine with a document finisher which had a output tray capable of receiving & stapling the finished booklets in total.
When we pointed this out to client they contacted the Canon Salesman who somewhat red faced had to add £1700 to his quote for a finisher.
Needless to say the client choose to purchase her machine from us!
TOTAL COST OF OWNERSHIP
At a local Business Breakfast Club we were asked for a quotation for a small colour multi-function machine.
We recommended a Canon product for around £200.00 + vat.
At the next weeks meeting the customer produced a Dell flyer with a similar product listed for £97.00 + vat and asked us why we where so expensive.
We asked the client for a rough estimate of his usage (total number of items printed, copied and faxes received) in one month, he conservatively estimated his use as 500 documents (a ream of paper) per month, we asked him to bare with us till next week so we could calculate his true cost of ownership. When we calculated his monthly usage ink and paper cost plus the cost of the equipment.
At the next weeks meeting we were able to confirm that:-
The Canon we recommended would cost him £1245.80 over the next 3 years,
The Dell he thought was cheaper would have cost £2937.60 over 3 years
